About Finance Guide
Finance Guide is an independent, research-based guide to personal finance in South Africa.
Most money advice online is written for American or British readers. It talks about 401(k)s and ISAs, quotes dollars, and ignores the rules that actually apply here. South Africans need different answers. When is the eFiling deadline? How much will a two-pot withdrawal cost after tax? Which tax-free savings account has the lowest fees? Does gap cover make sense with your medical aid plan?
Those are the questions we answer. For each topic we read the primary sources: SARS guides, National Treasury and FSCA documents, the Acts themselves, product fee schedules and policy wordings. Then we publish a plain-English explanation with every source linked and the date we checked it. See how we research.
What we cover
- Tax & SARS: eFiling, deadlines, refunds, deductions and provisional tax
- Saving & Investing: tax-free savings accounts, ETFs and investing platforms
- Retirement: the two-pot system, retirement annuities and payouts
- Insurance & Medical Aid: car, life and funeral cover, medical aid and gap cover
- Home & Solar: home loans, solar financing and electricity tariffs
- Banking & Credit: bank fees, credit scores, loans and debt
What we are not
We are not a financial services provider and we don't give personal financial advice as defined in the Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services (FAIS) Act. Our guides are general information to help you understand your options and ask better questions. For advice on your own situation, speak to a financial adviser registered with the FSCA, or a registered tax practitioner.
How we're funded
Finance Guide is free to read. We may earn money from display ads and from some links to products we cover (affiliate or referral links). That money never decides what we recommend or how we rank products. Read our affiliate disclosure.
Who's behind it
Finance Guide was founded in 2026 and is written by a small, independent editorial team, published under a shared byline: the editorial team. Our standards are in our editorial policy.
