Short answer: more than 4.3 million South Africans have unclaimed retirement benefits worth over R50 billion, often from old jobs they've forgotten about. You can check for free on the FSCA's unclaimed benefits search, or by calling 0800 20 3722. If there's a match, you claim directly from the fund. Never pay anyone to find your money for you (FSCA; EWN, 20 October 2026).

Watch out for scams. The FSCA search is free. Be careful of anyone who contacts you out of the blue saying you're owed money, or who asks for an upfront fee or your banking passwords.

How much money is unclaimed?

Under the Pension Funds Act, a retirement benefit becomes unclaimed if it hasn't been paid out for 24 months after it became payable (Moonstone).

Why money goes unclaimed

According to Moonstone:

  • People change jobs and leave money in their old employer's fund, especially now that the two-pot system preserves savings when you resign.
  • Funds have poor records: missing or wrong ID numbers and surnames.
  • Members don't respond to tracing letters, or don't know they belonged to a fund.
  • Members die and their families don't know about the fund.

How to check (free)

The FSCA lists these options:

Channel How
Online The FSCA's Unclaimed Benefits Search on fsca.co.za
Phone Toll-free 0800 20 3722
SMS Your ID number to 30913
Email Your ID number to Pensions.UBmemberID@FSCA.co.za
In person FSCA, River Walk Office Park, Block B, 41 Matroosberg Road, Ashlea Gardens, Pretoria

You'll need your name, surname and ID number, and if you know them, the fund name and your old employer's name. You can check for benefits from as far back as 1981.

Tips for a better search (EWN):

  • Search under every name you've used: maiden name, married surnames, initials and middle names.
  • Search for deceased parents or relatives too. Beneficiaries can still claim.

If you find a match

The FSCA doesn't pay out benefits. It gives you the contact details of the fund or administrator, and you then claim directly from them using their normal process (FSCA).

Have these ready (EWN):

  • Your ID
  • Bank details
  • Proof of any name change, such as a marriage certificate
  • For a deceased relative: the death certificate and proof of your relationship

Retirement benefits are taxed when paid out. See our retirement lump sum tax guide.

Life policies and investments

For a lost life insurance policy or investment, contact the company directly. If you don't know which insurer, the Association for Savings and Investment SA (ASISA) can help you trace a deceased person's policies. For old bank accounts, contact the bank.

What's changing

In the February 2026 Budget, the government said it would create a central administrator for unclaimed financial assets (BusinessTech). On 20 August 2026, National Treasury published a discussion paper proposing that (SAnews):

  • A central administrator would keep records and trace owners and beneficiaries.
  • Financial institutions would hand over unclaimed assets, to be invested with the Corporation for Public Deposits, a Reserve Bank subsidiary.
  • It would start with unclaimed retirement benefits, then extend to other sectors.

Public comment closed on 19 September 2026. It's still a proposal, and nothing changes for you yet: you can still claim directly from your fund.

Avoid losing track in future

  1. Keep a list of every pension fund, retirement annuity and policy you have, with the fund name and member number.
  2. Update your contact details with old funds when you move or change your number.
  3. Nominate beneficiaries on your policies and tell your family where your money is.
  4. Consider consolidating old preserved funds, after checking the costs and rules. See our two-pot guide.

FAQ

How do I check if I have unclaimed pension money?

Use the free FSCA Unclaimed Benefits Search on fsca.co.za, call 0800 20 3722, or SMS your ID number to 30913.

Does the FSCA pay out unclaimed benefits?

No. It gives you the fund's or administrator's contact details, and you claim from them.

Is there a fee to find unclaimed money?

The FSCA search is free. Don't pay anyone upfront to find your money.

Can I claim a deceased parent's unclaimed benefit?

Possibly, if you're a beneficiary or heir. Search with their details, then contact the fund with the death certificate and proof of your relationship.

Do unclaimed retirement benefits expire?

The FSCA says you may still be entitled to a benefit even if you were a fund member as far back as 1981. Treasury has proposed reforms, but nothing has changed for claimants yet.
