Short answer: funeral policies pay a lump sum to cover funeral costs when a covered person dies. Most have a waiting period of up to six months for death from natural causes, and the rules don't allow longer. Accidental death is usually covered from the first premium. If you switch insurers within a short window, the waiting period you've already served can count towards the new policy (Moonstone on the FSCA rules; 1Life).

General information, not advice. Read the policy summary for waiting periods, who's covered and what happens if you miss a premium. Never cancel an existing policy until the new one is in force.

Rule 2A.6.1 of the Long-term Policyholder Protection Rules says a funeral policy "may not impose a waiting period exceeding the shorter of one quarter of the term of the policy or six months" for death from natural causes. So traditional insurers can impose up to six months (Moonstone).

Microinsurers sell short-term policies of up to 12 months, which originally limited them to about three months. In March 2024, the FSCA's INS Notice 3 of 2024 exempted microinsurers from that rule (with conditions), so they can now offer waiting periods similar to traditional insurers.

How a typical policy works

Using 1Life's published terms as an example (1Life):

Situation Typical waiting period
Death from natural causes (new cover) 6 months and 6 paid premiums
Death by suicide 12 months and 12 paid premiums
Accidental death Covered from the start

Other insurers' terms differ, so always check your own policy.

Switching insurers: if you move from one funeral policy to a similar one with another insurer, and your old cover was active within the last 31 days, you may only need to serve the remaining part of the waiting period. For example, after two months on your old policy, you'd have four months left (1Life). Ask your new insurer to confirm this in writing before you cancel the old policy.

What to check before you buy

  1. Cover amount: enough for a funeral in your area and culture, but not so much that the premium strains your budget.
  2. Who's covered: main member, spouse, children, parents and extended family. Each usually has its own cover limit and age limits.
  3. Premium increases: does the premium rise every year, or at certain ages?
  4. Missed premiums: how long is the grace period before the policy lapses?
  5. Claims: how quickly are valid claims paid, and what documents are needed? 1Life, for example, says valid claims are paid within two business days.
  6. Who's selling it: buy from a registered insurer or an authorised financial services provider.

Common reasons funeral claims are rejected

  • Death from natural causes during the waiting period
  • Missed premiums that caused the policy to lapse
  • Non-disclosure, such as an incorrect age or relationship for a covered family member. Non-disclosure is a leading cause of insurance disputes (Moonstone on the Ombud's 2023 report)
  • People not covered under the policy, for example extended family who were never added

If your claim is rejected

Ask the insurer for its reasons in writing, then use its complaints process. If that fails, complain for free to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, which now handles long-term insurance complaints too (NFO). The NFO returned almost R443 million to consumers in its second year (Daily Maverick).

Funeral cover vs other options

  • Life cover pays a larger amount and can replace income, but is usually underwritten (with health questions).
  • Savings for funeral costs avoid premiums, but take time to build. A tax-free savings account or RSA Retail Savings Bond can work for this.
  • Existing cover: check your employer benefits and bank accounts first. Some may already include funeral benefits.

FAQ

What is the waiting period for funeral cover?

Usually six months for death from natural causes, which is the maximum the rules allow for traditional insurers. Accidental death is usually covered from the first premium.

Is there funeral cover with no waiting period?

For accidental death, yes. For natural causes, most new policies have a waiting period. If you switch from a similar policy within the time allowed, you may only serve the remaining part.

Can I switch funeral policies without starting the waiting period again?

Often yes, if the new cover is similar and your old policy was active within the last 31 days, depending on the insurer. Get it in writing first.

How quickly do funeral policies pay out?

It varies by insurer. Some, such as 1Life, say they pay valid claims within two business days.

Where can I complain about a rejected funeral claim?

To the insurer first, then to the National Financial Ombud Scheme, which is free.
