Short answer: RSA Retail Savings Bonds are savings products issued by the South African government. In October 2026, fixed-rate bonds pay 8.25% (2 years), 8.50% (3 years) and 9.00% (5 years), and inflation-linked bonds pay inflation plus 4.25% to 4.75%. You need a South African ID and bank account. There are no fees, but you can only withdraw early after 12 months, with a penalty (RSA Retail Savings Bonds; RSA Retail Bonds FAQ).
General information, not financial advice. Rates are set monthly and only apply to money invested in that period. Check the official site for today's rate before you invest.
Current rates (October 2026)
| Bond | Term | Rate |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed rate | 2 years | 8.25% |
| Fixed rate | 3 years | 8.50% |
| Fixed rate | 5 years | 9.00% |
| Inflation-linked | 3 years | Inflation + 4.25% |
| Inflation-linked | 5 years | Inflation + 4.50% |
| Inflation-linked | 10 years | Inflation + 4.75% |
Source: rsaretailbonds.gov.za, checked 16 October 2026. A fixed-rate bond locks in the rate for its whole term. With the repo rate raised to 7.25% in September 2026 (Moneyweb), locking in a 5-year rate can make sense if you think rates will fall later. Nobody can predict that reliably, though.
The rules
According to the official FAQ:
- Who can invest: South African citizens with a valid ID number and a South African bank account. There's no age limit, but parents must sign for children under 18.
- Fixed-rate and inflation-linked bonds: individuals only. Companies and groups can't buy them.
- Top Up Bonds: a 3-year bond for individuals and informal groups such as stokvels. Start with more than R500 and top up from R100.
- Interest options (fixed rate): paid twice a year, monthly, or reinvested. You choose one option per investment and can't change it after the first interest date.
- Inflation-linked bonds: interest is paid on 30 November and 31 May, on the inflation-adjusted capital.
- Early withdrawals: only after 12 months, with a penalty.

Tax on retail bond interest
Interest from retail bonds is South African interest. It counts towards your annual interest exemption of R23,800 (under 65) or R34,500 (65 and older), and anything above that is taxed at your marginal rate (Treasury Budget 2026 tax guide). See our interest exemption guide.
For completely tax-free growth, compare a tax-free savings account. You can put in R46,000 a year, and some providers offer government bonds inside a TFSA (SARS). See our TFSA comparison.
